Dear Dr Irina Vavilova,
The IAU is working on the goal, set by the “Strategic Plan 2010-2020” to advance „outreach and education of the public.“ The public would then become aware of the importance of astronomy for “culture and society, technology and skills, science and research.” I am very happy that you are specially advocating this plan as National Outreach Contacts in Ukraine.
On the basis of my experiences as a teacher of mathematics, physics, and astronomy in Germany, I have developed a special educational app for iOS and Android, which supports precisely this same goal, the app “Audio Sky Tours.” It contains some informative Audio Tours, which can be followed, either directly on the night sky, or alternatively with star maps on the display. If you are listening to them in the given sequence, you experience astronomy as it has grown historically from the first scientific activities of mankind up to the measuring of gravitational waves. The systematic structure makes a lasting access into astronomy possible even for laymen. The app introduces young people about astronomy to physics and can generate them interest in the sciences. The free episode 1 is already suitable for students over 12 years.
At present, versions in three languages have emerged. Please see
www.audio-sky-tours.net . The English version, “Audio Sky Tours,” has been certified with 5 stars by the Educational App Store (United Kingdom).
If you like the app, here are a few suggestions on how you might use it.
1. If you inform observatories, planetariums, amateur astronomers and teachers in your country, they are able to use it with groups. Teachers can save on lessons, by having their students listen to the episodes on their own at a suitable observation point, or at home, perhaps with their parents and friends. After each episode, the teachers can consolidate and evaluate in lessons what their students have learned. For this purpose, matching work sheets have been put at your disposal on the website audio-sky-tours.net . 2. The app is very well suited for individual studies. If you inform the public about this app in the media, you are reaching interested students and adults directly and you are promoting country-wide education in astronomy.
